Saturday, September 26, “Every Hour Eye to Eye” 7:30 PM Join us as we explore the life and insights of Dag Hammarskjöld with Roger Lipsey. Second secretary-general of the United Nations (1953-1961), Dag Hammarskjöld left a legacy of acute political wisdom, relevant today and always. ‘What would Dag do?’ is a question that still lives at the United Nations. And he left something more: his private journal, Markings, published after his death in an air crash, which revealed him to have been a spiritual seeker of taut discipline and great insight. Tonight’s presentation begins with a powerful documentary film, The Vision of a Secretary-General: Dag Hammarskjöld and the UN (2005) directed by Stig Holmqvist. Roger Lipsey, currently writing a book on Hammarskjöld, will comment on the film, introduce additional themes and then invite audience discussion. The evening’s title is from a poem by Hammarskjöld Roger Lipsey, Ph.D., is a well-published author and friend of Orchard House Café. His weekly blog on Hammarskjöld’s political wisdom can be found at www.dag-hammarskjold.com. Suggested donation: $15 ($10 seniors and students)

Dr. Maziar Khoshsima plays tar, a Persian lute, and Ron Erickson plays the tombak and daf drums. Majid K. Shahi, the group’s vocalist, organized Saba Ensemble in 2005 and the group has performed to promote Persian traditional music since then. Suggested donation: $15 ($10 seniors and students)
Synthesizing influences as diverse as Kaki King, RJD2, and the folk music of Ireland and the Middle East, for years Joshua Sturm and James Molloy have been at work reinventing the acoustic guitar, deconstructing it into orchestral parts capable of symphonic harmonies. Tapping, slapping, plucked harmonics, drumming on the sound box, and beyond, visually idiosyncratic and emotionally unsafe, Joshua and James’ esoteric ‘percussive fingerstyle’ unfolds against a backdrop of eerie melodies you seem to recollect, but that in fact you’ve never heard. See these two one-man bands perform, both separately and together, for a rare evening of instrumental music.
Somewhere between the line of blues, jazz, and R&B lies New York’s young songwriter, Charlie Phillips. His recently recorded debut EP, “Charlie Phillips” captures the songwriter’s respect and love for the masters who have come before him. "From Hendrix to D’Angelo to Dylan… his distinctive soulful tracks convey a sense of learning and experience,” says Kathleen Reagan of The Independent. Anxious to share his songs with audiences, Charlie Phillips performs with fellow musicians who studied with him at the Purchase Conservatory of Music. The result is a groove-based sound, with Charlie’s smooth guitar styling and Buckley-esque tenor soaring above.
